The UV lamp causes the organisms to oxidize, which turns organic materials into carbon dioxide. The direct conductivity approach is the one used for detection. The difference between the concentration of total carbon (TC) in samples evaluated after oxidation and the concentration in samples not subjected to oxidation is the formula for total organic carbon (TOC), which makes up the total inorganic carbon (TIC). Stated differently, TOC is computed as follows: TOC = TC – TIC.
